I left this village to another called Nabo, which was five leagues away. From there I continued for six leagues to Santa Maria de Belén and then to the village of San Cristobal, and then for six leagues to the village of San Francesco Alto. From there it was five leagues to the village of Cholantes, and then five leagues to San Ramon, two leagues to Jacaltenango, two leagues to the village of Viento, ten leagues to the village [and river] of Cuchumatanes, three leagues to San Martin, three leagues to the village of Picatan, five leagues to the village of San Antonio Breskin, two leagues to the village of La Frerayeeta, seven leagues to the village of Isquintenango, three leagues to the village of Pinole, five leagues to the village of Teopisca, six leagues to Ciuidad Real, two leagues to Bilacana, six leagues to the village of Estaba, five leagues to Chiapa, and two leagues to the Spanish Chiapas.

I arrived in this city and stayed at the house of the governor. In this city, there is a bishop called Don Alonzo Birrau who had quarreled with the provincial, I mean the abbot of the Dominican monastery, who had actually excommunicated his city. When I saw the hatred and enmity between them, I was deeply hurt and I spoke with both of them, trying my best to reconcile them. Two days later, it was the feast of the birth of the Virgin [September 8] and the holy sacrament was placed on the altar as the bishop celebrated mass. After he was finished, I went up with the provincial and the governor and stood with them in front of the bishop and kneeled down saying, “Thus said Jesus, My peace I leave with you.69 He commanded us to live in peace and harmony and here, in the presence of Jesus who is looking at us from the sacred altar, we need to leave all evil thoughts and hatred, and change them to love and meekness and to do as he commanded: bless others and not curse them.”70

The bishop stood up and raised his hand and blessed them as he smiled, saying, “Blessed be the name of the Lord: a priest from the city of Baghdad has come to reconcile us.”

He then removed the ban on the city and we went to the bishop’s house, where we had lunch. After we finished, the bishop stood up and gave me a chain of gold worth two hundred piasters while the aforementioned governor gave me a young mule and the provincial also gave me a present. Meanwhile the priests, monks, and commoners would not leave me for a minute, and kept on asking me about my country, which they call the Old World. I stayed there for sixteen days.

I left for the village of Tuxtla, which was two leagues away, and then went four leagues to the village of Ocozocoautla, seven leagues to the village of Kikibilla, and four leagues to the village of Tapanatepec.
